Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

WHAT JOBS ARE AVAILABLE IN MAKEUP ARTISTRY?

A.

Our graduates find work in many areas of artistry. Some work in the retail environment starting their own makeup businesses, many become national artists for major cosmetic companies. Some freelance doing bridal makeup, or work with dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Others work with photographers, models, and designers doing print ads, catalogs, fashion magazines, music videos, and runway shows. Many artists work with celebrities and actors in the theater or work with musicians on tour or on music videos, or in film and television doing motion pictures, commercials, daytime television, sitcoms, reality shows, sports and news.

Q.

WHAT KIND OF MONEY CAN I MAKE AS A MAKEUP ARTIST?

A.

The quality of your work and your commitment to excellence are two deciding factors; next is which industry you choose. The Cosmetic retail industry is the entry level for many makeup artists. it averages the lowest income at $12 - $26 per hour with or without sales commission. Bridal makeup can be $75 - $1000 depending on the size of the bridal party. Production work is paid by “day rate” which averages between $250 - $1500 per day for Print, Video, and Runway work and for Film between $400 - $850 per day, sometimes with a lot of overtime (time and ½ or double time).

Q.

DO YOU HELP GRADUATES WITH JOB PLACEMENT?

A.

Many employers contact our Career Services Department when they need an artist or a team of artists for an event. Many of the postings students and graduates receive are from independent films, music videos, theatrical productions on a budget, photographers looking to “test”, fashion designers, events coordinators, charities, salons, spas or cosmetic companies looking for demonstration artists . During your enrollment at Cosmix, our staff will help you prepare your resume, make business & comp cards, and build your professional portfolio. Upon successful graduation, students are counseled concerning professional career pursuit and development. We encourage students to attend career workshops and continuously communicate with the school for further support and assistance with career management.

Q.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?

A.

If you can, we encourage a visit to the school to meet with our Admissions Director and tour our facility. You will learn about all the opportunities a career as a makeup artist offers you. We will answer all your questions and concerns. If at the time of your appointment, a class is in session, you'll have a chance to observe and speak with other students. If you decide to pursue a career in makeup, specific courses would be recommended to ensure that you achieve the training required to attain your personal goals for your career.

Q.

HOW DO I GET ACCEPTED TO COSMIX?

A.

You must first apply for acceptance and be interviewed by a member of our Admissions team. There are qualities that we look for: a strong desire to become a professional make-up artist is needed, and willingness to work hard and adhere to high standards. It is highly recommended that you speak with an Admissions Advisor prior to submitting your registration to ensure that your educational desires meet your occupational goals. You may be interviewed in person or by phone to assess your interests, goals and abilities.

Q.

I HAVE MY OWN SET OF BRUSHES AND MAKEUP, DO I STILL NEED TO PAY MATERIAL FEES?

A.

Material Fees cover photographic fees and materials, all makeup and special effects supplies used in class, and the Freelance Makeup Kit, Brush Kit, Airbrushing Machine, and Set Bag. Students are trained with the specific brushes and products in the schools kits. Due to sanitary concerns, no outside products may be added to your kit until you have completed Multi-Media Makeup Artistry and are beginning Production Makeup Artistry.
